How to Develop Effective Web Typography?

Typography provides visual dimension to written text. It helps the reader to emphasise on certain points, more relevant with respect to focal idea. Avoiding incorrect typography helps send clear message to the viewer. The most important factors affecting typography of web content are:

Accessibility:  Accessibility ensures that any person irrespective of disabilities can seek information in your content. A reader with colour recognition or other cognitive issues must be able to read the content. Respect your reader’s limitations for making your content appealing. By keeping a high colour contrast ratio between text and background, you can make the reading process easy. If your website design caters to individual limitations, it will create more impact. However too much of contrast also creates sight problems. If background is of dark colour, text must never be lightly coloured.

Readability: It refers to placing of words and combinations in the text such that reader to skim over and access content with ease. Readability enhancing tools include line spacing, paragraph spacing, providing bold headings, conclusions etc.

Absence of visual distractions: For effective transmission of message, you need to reduce visual distractions to minimum. Distractions may be the result of too many font styles or colours. It is good experience working with numerous fonts, but excessive usage will make it look disorganised. There must be an upper limit on the number of font styles in a single layout.

Optimisation of Line length: For optical reading, the average word content for 1 sentence is 8 to 12 words. This is approximately equal to 50 to 60 characters in one line. This will ensure that readers will not have to jump frequently between different lines. So they will not skip something important. While designing fluid layouts, you need to be careful about viewport size. Effective typography helps decide the breakpoints of design.
